In The time of the landscape by Jacques Rancière, the author translates the English word « intricacy » as « intrication, » a term introduced into the art world by the painter and engraver Hogarth. It refers to the way a spectacle or a thing presents itself to us, or rather how this thing does not fully reveal itself in perception. It does not necessarily denote an obvious complexity but rather a perceptual elusiveness of the thing. This gave rise to a theory of the straight line versus the serpentine line, which he deemed more beautiful in his « Analysis of beauty. »
In this initial intrication, I used the material line of thread to traverse the surface of the canvas, and one can see the curved line of a circle’s contour emerging from the interweaving of numerous straight lines. Indeed, in embroidery, one must penetrate the material to change direction. On the other side, thanks to the light, the straight lines can be seen this time untangled, arranged side by side, allowing the circle to emerge from the void, in a counter-form.
