Counterform

In typography, the counterform is the open or closed white space inside certain letters. The counterform thus stands in opposition to or complements a form. Henri Matisse, for example, used the counterforms of his cut-out shapes. Here are twelve compositions, twelve different combinations of counterforms that were drawn—yet not drawn—by the lines of my construction set.
